Life Events

St Luke's is a beautiful and welcoming venue to celebrate and remember important life occasions together. Please contact the church wardens for more information on any of the services below.

Weddings

We would be delighted to explore with you the possibility of holding your wedding at St. Luke’s and we are very committed to helping you have a wonderful day, and also a happy and fulfilling married life together.  To this end we run a wedding preparation course each year for couples wanting to get married at St Luke’s.

Baptism/Christening

A  Baptism service is a joyful event that takes place during the 10.00am Sunday service at St Luke’s. In a baptism service, the child is baptised on the understanding that they will be brought up within the Christian faith and that their faith will be nurtured in the home and within a local church congregation. In the service, parents and godparents make declarations and promises about their own faith and about their intention to nurture their child’s faith.

Thanksgiving service

Do you want to give thanks to God for your child and ask for God’s blessing on them and your family life?  If so, a thanksgiving could be for you, especially if you are not comfortable making promises which you feel you cannot keep. A  thanksgiving service differs from baptism in that there is no baptizing with water but there are prayers of thanksgiving for the baby, some words for the parents to say, and the Vicar takes the child into her arms and prays for them. It is a bit like a naming ceremony. Jesus did something very similar in the Bible and that’s why we do it today.

Both thanksgiving and baptism form part of a normal Sunday service. It is usually possible to arrange a date that is suitable for parents and any other family members and friends who may want to attend.

No charge is made for either service.

Funerals

What does a funeral service involve?

A service normally includes music, readings, prayers, a tribute, a short address and space for reflection.  The length of a service can vary, although it usually lasts for 30-45 minutes in church and 30 minutes in a crematorium. The committal service at the crematorium following on from a service in church usually lasts 10 minutes.
